Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody told Parliament today (Feb. 5) that electricity tariffs will be reduced by 30% over the next three years, in line with the government’s commitment.
He said the reduction would be achieved by lowering the cost of electricity generation, which has already dropped from Rs. 37 to Rs. 29 per unit since the current government took office — a 22% decrease.
The Minister was responding to questions raised by MP Ravi Karunanayake.
“The electricity bill cannot be reduced unless we cut the cost of generating a unit. Right now, we are buying electricity at a high price and selling it at a loss,” he said.
The Minister added that the government aims to further bring down the cost to Rs. 25 per unit, enabling the promised 30% cut in consumer electricity bills. (Newswire)
