The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued a severe lightning advisory for parts of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the Galle and Matara districts.

According to the Department of Meteorology, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely in these areas. Temporary localized strong winds may also occur during thunderstorms.

Residents are urged to take precautions to minimize potential damage and injury due to lightning. The public is advised to seek shelter indoors and avoid staying under trees, stay away from open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and water bodies.

Avoid using wired telephones and electrical appliances during thunderstorms, and to refrain from using open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors, and boats, the Met Department said. Caution should be exercised around fallen trees and downed power lines. (Newswire)
