A special inquiry has been launched into the death of a seven-year-old child who was killed after a piece of cement plaster fell from the exterior wall of a housing complex in Modara Madampitiya, it is reported.
The incident occurred while the child was playing near the complex when a section of cement plaster collapsed and struck his head.
The child sustained critical injuries and was admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo, where he died early Thursday.
The victim has been identified as Motir Sandaruwan, a seven-year-old resident of Randiya Uyana, Modara, Colombo 15.
Residents allege that officials of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) had been informed on several occasions about the risks posed by deteriorating cement plaster on the housing complex’s exterior walls. They claim the accident occurred due to a failure to take necessary preventive action despite these warnings.
Further investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The matter was also raised in Parliament on Thursday, where the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development addressed the incident. The minister noted that construction of the housing complex began in 2014. (NewsWire)
