Opposition MP Chamara Sampath today clapped on his own in Parliament while claiming that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had travelled to Kandy by helicopter for the first time.

Speaking during parliamentary proceedings, Sampath said the President had criticised the use of helicopters for official travel while in the Opposition, but added that he was pleased the President was now using air transport, noting it was important for carrying out presidential duties.

“I am happy that the President is using a helicopter now, because it is important for the President’s work,” Sampath said.

However, it was not immediately clear how President Dissanayake travelled to Kandy today, despite his presence in the city.

Since assuming office, President Dissanayake has rarely used helicopters for domestic travel, opting instead to travel mainly by road for official engagements.

There was no immediate response from the President’s office regarding the mode of transport used for today’s visit. (Newswire)
