The government has decided to establish a new police division dedicated to preventing and investigating cyber crime, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala said.
Speaking at the opening of the Polpitiya Police Station on Thursday (February 6), the Minister said cyber-related crimes are on the rise in Sri Lanka, with between 23 and 25 such incidents reported daily.
He described the figure as significant and stressed the need for a specialised unit equipped with modern technology and expert knowledge to effectively investigate and resolve cyber crimes.
The Minister said steps are already being taken to modernise the Police Department, including the gradual introduction of new technologies and specialised training to strengthen investigative capabilities.
He reiterated that the government’s objective is to transform the Sri Lanka Police into a highly professional, efficient and corruption-free institution, adding that continuous efforts are being made to achieve this goal.
The Minister also said measures have been put in place to create a suitable environment for capable officers to advance within the service, while procedures are in place to remove officers found guilty of misconduct. (Newswire)
