The Trincomalee High Court has ordered Venerable Balangoda Kassapa Thero and nine other suspects to be released on bail.
Kassapa thero and nine others were in remand custody in connection with the incident involving the placement of a Buddha statue at the Trincomalee Bodhiraja Vihara in November 2025.
The order was issued today (Feb. 11) when the court considered the bail application filed on behalf of Kassapa Thero and the other suspects.
The group, which included four Buddhist monks, was arrested over allegations of unlawfully constructing a hut and placing a Buddha statue within the coastal security zone of Trincomalee town.
The suspects were produced before the Trincomalee High Court last week. At that time, the State Counsel appearing for the Attorney General requested two days to file objections to the bail applications.
Granting the request, the court postponed the consideration of the bail applications to today (Feb. 11), and has ruled that all ten suspects be released on bail. (Newswire)
