As part of the ongoing modernization of Sri Lanka’s postal service, 10 lorries and 20 crew cabs valued at over Rs. 590 million were added to the postal transport network on Thursday (12). The total allocation for the project is Rs. 849 million.
The handover took place at the Postal Headquarters under the leadership of Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, with Deputy Minister Dr. Kaushalya Ariyaratne in attendance.
In addition, several initiatives were launched to improve postal operations: distribution of bicycle carriers for postmen, opening of an Operations Control and Response Unit, and provision of desktop computers, laptops, and tablets to enhance office efficiency. Solar panels will also be installed at the Postal Headquarters, Central Mail Exchange, and Batticaloa Post Office.
Minister Dr. Jayatissa noted that Sri Lanka Post generated Rs. 13,450 million in revenue last year despite facing two major operational disruptions, and expressed confidence that revenue targets would be met this year. He added that 2,800 staff members will be recruited and regularized to strengthen operations.
The newly acquired vehicles and equipment, funded under the 2025 Budget, will support islandwide delivery of all postal items, including COD and SL Post Courier services. The Minister urged the public to make greater use of postal services to further increase revenue and assured that the government is committed to modernizing and securing the future of the postal service.
The event was attended by Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara, Deputy Postmasters General, postal staff, and trade union representatives. (NewsWire)
