Ex-Army Soldier arrested with Live Ammunition in Wattala

A 35-year-old former Army soldier has been arrested in connection with the recovery of a cache of live ammunition in Wattala, police said.

Officers of the Western Province North Crimes Division conducted a raid on February 13 in the Gaal Handiya area of the Wattala Police Division based on received information and took into custody a parcel containing live ammunition.

Subsequent investigations revealed the parcel contained four T-56 live rounds, four revolver rounds, two pistol rounds and 11 rounds of assorted types.

The suspect, a resident of Polpagoda, Yakkalamulla, was arrested in the early hours of February 15 while in hiding in the Udathelagama area within the Delwala Police Division.

Police said the suspect is also wanted on open warrants issued by courts in Galnewa, Kalawana and Elpitiya Police Divisions.

Authorities are expected to seek a 72-hour detention order from court to conduct further investigations. The Western Province North Crimes Division is continuing inquiries. (Newswire)
