Lawyers affiliated with the ruling National People’s Power (NPP) have condemned the killing of Attorney-at-Law Buddhika Mallawaarachchi and his wife, calling for swift investigations and stronger measures to curb violent crime.
In a statement issued on February 15, the NPP Lawyers’ Association expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of Mallawaarachchi and his wife, who were killed in a shooting on February 13.
The group described the attack as a “brutal and inhumane assault” on two citizens and said the incident underscored the urgent need to dismantle what it referred to as remnants of a “para-state” culture of violence fostered in the past.
The statement noted that the target of such violence could vary — including journalists, police officers, judges or lawyers — and stressed that the state bears responsibility for ensuring public safety and upholding the rule of law.
The lawyers urged authorities to accelerate investigations, prevent further crimes and bring those responsible before the law without delay. They also expressed confidence that the government would fulfil its duty to protect the dignity and security of all citizens.
Police are continuing investigations into the killing. (Newswire)
