Acting Registrar arrested over Rs. 500 alleged bribe

An Acting Registrar of Births and Deaths Registrar attached to the Alayadivembu Divisional Secretariat has been arrested on allegations of soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs. 500.

The arrest was made by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) following a complaint lodged by a businessman residing in Maradamunai.

According to the complaint, the businessman had visited the Divisional Secretariat to register his daughter’s birth certificate. It is alleged that the suspect initially demanded Rs. 1,000 as a bribe and accepted Rs. 500, instructing the complainant to bring the remaining Rs. 500 when collecting the registered birth certificate on Feb. 16, 2026.

When the complainant met the suspect today to obtain the birth certificate, the official allegedly demanded and accepted the balance Rs. 500 as a bribe.

The suspect was arrested at around this morning at the office maintained at her residence for carrying out duties as Birth and Death Registrar, CIABOC said.

She is scheduled to be produced before the Akkaraipattu Magistrate’s Court. (Newswire)
