An opposition Member of Parliament in Sri Lanka has tabled a motion urging the government to make a humanitarian appeal regarding the detention of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Ajith P. Perera, a lawmaker from the main opposition, submitted the adjournment motion in Parliament, citing concerns about Mr Khan’s health and wellbeing while in custody.

The motion refers to what it describes as credible reports raising humanitarian concerns and calls on the Sri Lankan government to engage the authorities in Pakistan through diplomatic and parliamentary channels.

It asks Colombo to encourage the Government of Pakistan to ensure Mr Khan receives adequate and independent medical care. The proposal also calls for a humanitarian appeal for his release, restoration of his freedom, or other appropriate relief in line with due process and internationally recognised human rights standards.

Mr Khan, who led Pakistan to victory at the 1992 Cricket World Cup before entering politics, is widely regarded as one of the country’s most prominent sports figures. The motion notes that his legacy in cricket has transcended political boundaries and fostered goodwill among cricketing nations, including Sri Lanka.

It further urges the Sri Lankan government to communicate the goodwill and sentiments of the Sri Lankan public, particularly the cricketing community, in recognition of Mr Khan’s contribution to international cricket and sports diplomacy.

The motion concludes by reaffirming Sri Lanka’s commitment to democratic values, humanitarian principles and international goodwill.

There has been no immediate response from the Sri Lankan government regarding the proposal. (Newswire)
