The Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development has announced that construction work on the Kadawatha–Mirigama section of the Central Expressway, including the Kadawatha interchange, is progressing rapidly, with the project currently at 42% physical completion.

According to the ministry, the expressway is expected to be completed by 2028. Once finished, it will improve connectivity between Colombo and the Kurunegala region, reduce travel times, and ease traffic congestion on the existing road network.

The ministry also noted that work is continuing according to schedule, with efforts focused on maintaining construction quality and meeting project timelines.

The 37‑kilometre stretch, which forms the first phase of the Central Expressway, had been stalled since mid‑2022 due to Sri Lanka’s economic crisis and the suspension of funding. Construction resumed under the new government following renewed financial arrangements, including a loan agreement with China. (NewsWire)
