Police have launched a special operation in the Southern Province to identify foreign nationals driving without valid driving licenses.

The development comes after Police this week said it is an offense to provide a motor vehicle, three-wheeler or motorcycle to a foreign national without a valid driving license, whether on a rental, lease or any other basis.

Legal action will be taken against the business owner or vehicle owner who provides such vehicles in violation of the law, Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler said.

The measure was taken to ensure the safety of foreign nationals who choose Sri Lanka as a tourist destination.

Police said five foreign nationals died in road accidents in 2025 while driving in Sri Lanka, while seven serious motor accidents involving foreign nationals had also been repprted.

78 minor accidents and six vehicle damage incidents, had also been reported.

Police said violations of the Motor Traffic Act by both drivers and vehicle owners had contributed to these accidents. (Newswire)
