Nearly 9,000 drivers and passengers have been fined for violating seatbelt regulations on Sri Lanka’s expressways, police said.

According to police, close to 9,000 individuals have been penalised so far for failing to comply with mandatory seatbelt requirements while travelling on expressways.

Police said inspections are being carried out at all entry and exit points to ensure strict enforcement of the regulation.

Wearing seatbelts became mandatory for both drivers and passengers travelling on expressways from Sept. 1 last year.

Authorities said the ongoing enforcement is aimed at improving road safety and reducing injuries in the event of accidents. (Newswire)
