Trump announces new 10% global tariff as he hits out at Supreme Court ruling

US President Donald Trump on Friday described the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision striking down his sweeping global tariffs as “deeply disappointing,” as he announced plans to introduce a new 10% levy on imports.

In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court of the United States found that Trump exceeded his authority by imposing broad tariffs under a law intended for national emergencies. The majority held that such taxes on imports require approval from Congress.

The decision applies specifically to Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day” tariffs, a set of sweeping duties imposed across a wide range of global imports. However, the ruling does not affect separate tariffs he introduced targeting specific countries or individual products.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion, joined by five other justices, concluding that the administration had overstepped the statutory limits of executive power.

Responding to the judgment, Trump signaled he would attempt to reimpose tariffs but did not provide details on the legal pathway he intends to pursue.

The ruling marks a significant setback for Trump’s trade agenda, which has centered on aggressive tariff measures aimed at reshaping U.S. trade relationships and reducing imports.

The White House has yet to outline a detailed plan for implementing the newly announced 10% global levy. (Newswire)
