Relatives of the 12 men who were sentenced to death last week over the murder of former Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer visited the Presidential Secretariat this morning to submit a written appeal seeking relief.

The group arrived at the Secretariat requesting an opportunity to meet the President and hand over a letter outlining what they described as injustices faced by their families following the court’s verdict. They were later granted a discussion with a senior official, according to those present.

Speaking to the media, several family members said they intend to pursue further legal avenues, including an appeal, and expressed hope for what they called a fair reconsideration of the case.

One woman, identifying herself as the wife of a convicted individual, said her husband had been the sole breadwinner supporting five children and extended family members. She said the family has since faced severe financial hardship and is currently living in rented accommodation.

“We have no one to support us. Our children are suffering. We are asking for justice and fairness,” she said.

Another relative said one of the convicted men had maintained his innocence prior to the verdict, telling his family that he had committed no wrongdoing.

Family members also highlighted ongoing financial and medical difficulties, including the treatment of a child with a serious respiratory condition.

Earlier this month, the High Court sentenced the accused to death over the killing of Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer. The case stems from an incident that took place during the period of civil unrest in 2022. (Newswire)
