80% of Akuregoda Double Murder Probe Completed – Police

Police say investigations into the double murder of an attorney-at-law and his wife who were shot dead near a supermarket in Akuregoda are about 80% complete.

Police Media Spokesman SSP F.U. Wootler made the statement at the Cabinet media briefing held on Feb. 24.

He said five suspects, including the alleged main gunman linked to the Akuregoda shooting, have been arrested so far.

Of them, three suspects are currently being detained and questioned under 90-day detention orders, while the remaining suspects have been remanded.

Wootler said 12 police teams are continuing investigations to apprehend several other suspects believed to be connected to the crime.

“We have been able to arrest five suspects, including the main shooter. Three are under 90-day detention orders and are being questioned, while the others have been remanded. Twelve police teams are conducting further investigations to arrest additional suspects. About 80% of the investigations into the Akuregoda incident have now been completed. We expect further progress in the coming days,” he said.

Police are continuing investigations into the shooting. (Newswire)
