A large protest was held in Batticaloa today (28) against the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and the proposed Prevention of State Terrorism Act (PSTA).

Participants called for the full repeal of the PTA and opposed replacing it with the PSTA. The march began at Kalladi Bridge and ended at Gandhi Park, drawing students, youth, civil society groups, political activists, and local residents.

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam joined the demonstration, along with TNA parliamentarians, local council members, and party supporters.

Organisers said the protest emphasised the need for laws that uphold human rights, justice, and equality before the law. They also called on the government and the NPP, which had promised to abolish the PTA before coming to power, to keep that promise. (NewsWire)
