The Sri Lankan government is closely monitoring the escalating conflict in the Middle East and does not condone war, Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Addressing a special media briefing on the current situation, Jayatissa said the government has called on all parties involved to cease hostilities and work toward ensuring global peace.

“The Middle East is an important region in the world and is directly tied to our economy. It must not be undermined,” he said, referring to the broader global and economic impact of the conflict.

Jayatissa said approximately 1 million Sri Lankan expatriate workers are currently employed in Middle Eastern countries. He said Sri Lanka’s diplomatic missions in the region are closely monitoring developments and extending necessary assistance.

He noted that an immediate evacuation of Sri Lankans from the region is not possible at present, as most airports remain closed due to the conflict.

The government has provided the following contact numbers for consular assistance and related inquiries:

* Ministry of Foreign Affairs: 0094 742595546
* Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE): 0094 719802822
* Hotline: 1989

Meanwhile, the government has decided to extend visas by two weeks, free of charge, for travelers currently in Sri Lanka. The extension will be valid for 14 days. Jayatissa said the decision will be reviewed depending on further developments.

He added that the government is also exploring alternative air routes to facilitate travelers seeking to return to their home countries. (Newswire)
