Sri Lanka Police have instructed all police stations to monitor businesses involved in the import, sale and repair of drones and their spare parts amid concerns over potential threats to national security.

In a media release, the Police Headquarters said the move comes amid concerns that drones or unmanned aerial vehicles could be used to gather sensitive information related to national security or to carry out possible terrorist attacks.

Police noted that the import, trade and operation of drones in Sri Lanka must be carried out in accordance with provisions under the Civil Aviation Act No. 14 of 2010.

However, authorities said information has been received that some institutions are importing drones and related spare parts and conducting trade in ways that could pose a threat to national security.

Accordingly, police stations have been instructed to pay special attention to institutions importing drones and spare parts, businesses selling such equipment and locations engaged in drone repairs to ensure they comply with the relevant legal provision. (Newswire)
