Probe ordered into Jaffna boat accident

Minister of Fisheries Ramaligam Chandrasekar has ordered an immediate investigation into the boat accident reported in Jaffna, directing the Sri Lanka Navy and all relevant agencies to determine the causes of the tragedy.

The Minister extended condolences to the families of the victims and assured them that the government will provide relief and support. 

He also requested a comprehensive report on whether the vessel was seaworthy, if passenger limits were exceeded, and whether maritime safety procedures were followed.

Chandrasekar instructed the Police and Navy to intensify search and rescue operations for those missing at sea, deploying all available resources. He further directed health authorities to ensure the injured receive the best possible medical care.

According to reports, the boat capsized shortly after departing from the Gurunagar Jetty in Jaffna en route to the Palaitivu Festival, leaving at least two people dead, while several others were rescued and hospitalized.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources confirmed that further updates will follow as investigations progress. (Newswire)
