Routine Post, Not a Travel Alert: US Embassy Colombo Clarifies

The U.S. Embassy in Colombo has clarified that a recent social media post regarding U.S. citizens in Sri Lanka was not a travel alert or advisory, after several media outlets reported it as such.

In a statement, the embassy said the post was a routine message intended to remind U.S. citizen travelers in Sri Lanka that the government had issued visa extensions and to provide information on how the embassy could assist Americans facing issues such as visa expirations or flight cancellations.

The embassy noted that the post was meant to offer guidance for U.S. citizens currently in the country and should not be interpreted as an official travel advisory.

It added that official travel advisories are issued through a separate formal system by the U.S. Department of State.

The embassy requested that the social media post not be mischaracterized as a travel advisory, warning that doing so could create confusion among Americans who rely on the State Department’s official travel guidance. (Newswire)
