Meeting held to address possible impact of Middle East conflict on Sri Lanka’s essential supplies

A special meeting of the Food Policy and Security Committee was held at the Parliamentary Complex to discuss the possible impact of the current conflict situation in the Middle East region on Sri Lanka’s supply of essential goods and food security.

The meeting was chaired by Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation K.D. Lal Kantha and Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe.

Attention was focused on maintaining adequate stocks of essential food items for the public, particularly in view of the upcoming festive season, as well as on the importation of essential food commodities and fluctuations in food prices.

Officials were also instructed to prepare a proper mechanism to ensure the continuous supply of fuel required for food production and the fisheries sector as a priority.

The meeting also discussed measures to manage the situation in the event that exporting countries impose restrictions on the export of fertiliser and agrochemicals required for local food production.

Prime Minister’s Secretary Pradeep Saputhanthri and Senior Additional Secretary to the President Kapila Janaka Bandara, along with other members of the Food Policy and Security Committee comprising ministry secretaries, were also present at the meeting. (NewsWire)
