Five food stall owners at Manning Market fined for unsafe food handling

Five food stall owners operating at the Peliyagoda Manning Market were each fined Rs. 25,000 by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (11) after pleading guilty to selling food without proper health safeguards.

Additional Magistrate H.D.D.J. Premaratne imposed the fines after the accused admitted to storing, displaying and selling food without following proper sanitary practices, according to a report by Lankadeepa.

The charges were filed following a raid conducted on March 5 by officials of the Peliyagoda Public Health Inspector’s Office.

The operation was carried out under the supervision of Medical Officer of Health Jayantha Ratnayake, with Chief Public Health Inspector Y.V.L. de Silva and Public Health Inspector D.P.S. Chinthaka Pathirana participating in the inspection.

Health officials filed cases against the five stall owners after the raid uncovered violations related to the improper storage, display and sale of food. (NewsWire)
