US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he had questioned why the United States sank an Iranian warship near Sri Lanka, killing dozens, adding that a military general told him it was “a lot more fun” to destroy the vessel rather than capture it.

Trump made the remarks during a campaign stop at Verst Logistics in the northern Kentucky district.

Speaking about U.S. military actions against Iran, Trump said American forces had destroyed dozens of vessels over a short period and that he questioned the decision.

“They knocked out 54 ships in two days. I got mad at my people. I said, ‘Why the hell did we kill them? Why didn’t we just capture them and use them in our Navy?’” Trump said.

According to Trump, military officials told him the vessels would not have met the standards required for use by the U.S. Navy.

“They said they wouldn’t have qualified for that,” he said, adding that one of his generals responded: “Sir, it’s a lot more fun doing it this way.”

Trump has sought in recent days to reassure international audiences that the economic impact of the conflict with Iran could be contained. The war involving Iran has now entered its 13th day. (Newswire)
