Sri Lanka’s largest underground water source has reportedly been discovered during a pipe-well excavation near the Pitabeddara Police Station, according to the National Water Supply and Drainage Board.
Speaking to the media, Southern Province Geologist Indrajith Gamage said this is the first time a source with a continuous flow of 10,000 litres (10 cubic meters) per minute has been identified.
Previously, the largest known source was in the Madu area, which produced 7,000 litres per minute, he said.
Gamage further said the discovery was made after studying rock layers and fractures to locate underground water, using specialized technical equipment.
The newly found source will be utilized to address water shortages in Pitabeddara, Morawaka, and the surrounding areas.
Plans are underway to distribute the water to affected communities, strengthening supply in regions that have long struggled with scarcity, he added. (Newswire)
