The United Arab Emirates has defended its actions amid escalating tensions with Iran, stating that it has the right to protect itself following what it described as 1,909 Iranian attacks on the country.

In a statement, the UAE Embassy in Colombo said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had accused the UAE of aggression against Iran despite the attacks carried out against the Gulf nation.

The embassy said the UAE “has every right to defend itself against this terrorist aggression,” while maintaining that it continues to prioritise restraint and seek a diplomatic path to de-escalate tensions in the region.

According to the statement, the UAE had also made sincere mediation efforts until the last moment between Washington and Tehran in an attempt to prevent the war.

The embassy further claimed that the remarks by the Iranian foreign minister had exposed Iran’s aggression and deepened its isolation.
