Sri Lankan marine biologist Dr. Asha de Vos’s portrait was displayed on the silver screen at the opening of the United Nations General Assembly, marking International Women’s Day and the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70).

The portrait, captured by photographer Bre Hartman, was featured as part of the UN General Assembly President’s campaign celebrating women who have shattered glass ceilings against all odds.

Accompanying the image was de Vos’s powerful message: “They told me I was not capable – so I made a discovery that changed the world.”

According to Dr. Asha de Vos, her words serve as a reminder to women everywhere that persistence and courage can open doors for countless others who may have believed they could not succeed.

Reacting to this proud moment for Sri Lanka, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Hemachandra extended his congratulations to Dr. de Vos and UN Women Sri Lanka.

“Her message stands as a reminder of the importance of empowering women to challenge limits, break barriers, and shape the future of science and humanity. We commend all those who continue to support women leaders, researchers, and innovators who bring pride to our nation,” he noted, in a statement on ‘X’. (Newswire)
