Vehicle importers have raised concerns over difficulties in obtaining fuel for imported vehicles under the government’s National Fuel Pass quota system, according to the Vehicle Importers’ Association of Sri Lanka (VIASL).

Speaking at a media briefing on Monday (16), VIASL President Prasad Manage said the QR code-based system has created challenges for importers, particularly for vehicles that arrive in the country without registration.

Manage said vehicles arriving at Hambantota International Port often do not contain sufficient fuel to be transported to Colombo, while the current fuel quota system does not allow importers to obtain fuel for such unregistered vehicles.

He said an importer brings in around 100 to 150 vehicles into the country each month and suggested that a special QR code system or a dedicated fuel quota be introduced to facilitate fuel supply for imported vehicles.

Manage also said the issue could affect the vehicle import sector, which he described as a significant source of tax revenue for the government.

He added that the association is willing to hold discussions with the authorities to find a practical solution to the issue. (NewsWire)
