Dr. Nishan de Mel, Executive Director of Verité Research, has proposed three practical measures to reduce fuel queues and save time, while maintaining the current total fuel allocation.
Presenting the recommendations, Dr. de Mel said the focus should be on improving efficiency in distribution rather than increasing fuel quotas.
The first proposal is to introduce a timing restriction system, where access to fuel stations is staggered based on the last digit of a vehicle’s number plate matching the date. He noted that this method would be simple to understand and easy to enforce.
Secondly, he suggested reducing the frequency of access to fuel by extending the renewal period from one week to 10 days. According to him, fewer visits to fuel stations would directly reduce congestion and waiting times.
The third recommendation is to increase the volume of fuel provided per visit to compensate for the reduced frequency. He explained that this would ensure consumers receive the same total amount of fuel, but with fewer trips and less time spent in queues.
Dr. de Mel emphasised that these measures could ease pressure on fuel stations and improve the overall system without requiring additional fuel supplies. (Newswire)
Verité Research: Key proposals to reduce fuel queues
1. Introduce timing restrictions
Allow fuel access based on the last digit of the vehicle number plate matching the date
2. Reduce frequency of access
Shift from weekly fuel access to once every 10 days
3. Increase volume per visit
Provide a larger fuel quota per visit to maintain the same total allocation
