British Airways has announced the launch of direct flights between London Gatwick and Colombo, marking a significant boost for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector ahead of the winter 2026 season.
The airline confirmed that flights to Colombo will commence on October 23, 2026, operating three times a week as part of its expanded winter schedule. The route will run for the winter season, offering direct connectivity between the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka.
Welcoming the development, British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Andrew Patrick described the move as positive news for both British tourists and Sri Lankans.
“Welcome news for British tourists and Sri Lankans for the winter season. Recognise there’s been a lot of disruption. Good to have a new direct route to Colombo from October to the Spring,” he said.
The introduction of the route comes amid strong global travel demand and shifting travel patterns, with airlines adjusting networks in response to disruptions in parts of the Middle East.
British Airways said the Colombo route will provide travellers with easier access to Sri Lanka, known for its beaches, wildlife, culture and cuisine, while also supporting tourism recovery efforts.
The flights will operate using Boeing 777 aircraft, offering three cabin classes — economy, premium economy and business class.
The expansion is part of British Airways’ wider winter 2026 growth plan, which includes a nine percent increase in its long-haul network and additional capacity on several key leisure routes.
Industry observers say the return of direct UK flights is expected to boost tourist arrivals, particularly during the peak winter travel season. (Newswire)
