An airstrike has hit the Iran-controlled South Pars section of the South Pars/North Dome gas-condensate field, the world’s largest natural gas reserve.
Iranian media have accused Israel of carrying out the strike, which a news agency affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said triggered a fire in the affected area. The fire has reportedly been brought under control.
The South Pars/North Dome field, located in the Persian Gulf, is jointly shared by Iran and Qatar and is considered the largest natural gas field in the world.
Qatar is one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas, while Iran relies largely on its production for domestic use due to ongoing sanctions.
Analysts note that Iran has not reached its full production capacity due to Western sanctions and management challenges, allowing Qatar to expand its output and global market share.
Qatar has condemned the reported Israeli strike, warning that attacks on critical energy infrastructure could have serious regional and global consequences.
Iran has vowed to retaliate, warning that it could target energy installations across the Gulf if such attacks continue. (NewsWire)
