The Department of Meteorology has issued an amber advisory warning of severe lightning across several provinces, valid until 11.00 p.m. today.
Thundershowers accompanied by lightning are expected in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Central, Southern, Uva, and North-Western provinces, as well as the Mannar district, particularly after 2.00 p.m, the Department said.
Accordingly, Mannar, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Puttalam, Matale, Kurunegala, Gampaha, Colombo, Kaluatara, Galle, Matara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Matale, Badulla, Monaragala and Hambantota districts were issued red alerts.
Temporary localized strong winds may also occur during thundershowers, it said urging the public to take precautions to minimize damage.
Public were advised to seek indoor shelter, avoid open areas and water bodies, and refrain from using wired electrical appliances during thunderstorms. (Newswire)
