The government will introduce a registration system for online businesses and courier service providers, Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe announced.
Speaking at an event held in line with World Consumer Rights Day, the Minister said the move is aimed at protecting consumers and ensuring the quality of goods sold through online platforms.
He noted that the rapid growth of online marketing has led to the emergence of networks offering goods at lower prices, but in some instances consumers receive products that do not meet expected standards.
“As online trade expands, it is essential to ensure that consumers receive quality goods. We are closely monitoring cases where substandard products are being sold through online platforms,” the Minister said.
Accordingly, all online sellers will be required to register under a formal system, while courier service providers involved in product delivery will also be brought under regulation. (NewsWire)
