The initiative falls under a broader plan to modernise 100 railway stations islandwide through the ‘Dream Destination’ programme, with the objective of providing clean, high-quality and comfortable railway facilities for passengers.
The programme was first launched at the Galle–Thalpe Railway Station last year, which has since been fully renovated and reopened to the public
Several other stations including Narahenpita, Dehiwala, Polonnaruwa, Kandy, Sarasavi Uyana and Maradana are also currently being upgraded through public-private partnerships.
The Bambalapitiya project, estimated at Rs. 60 million, is expected to be completed within five months.
Upgrades will include improvements to platforms, installation of lighting and CCTV systems, enhancement of toilets and seating facilities, and better accessibility for persons with disabilities.
The project will also strengthen deteriorated stairways and fully renovate the station roof, transforming it into a more resilient and passenger-friendly public space. (Newswire)
