A 32‑year‑old resident of Medawachchiya has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for allegedly assisting in a scheme to fraudulently withdraw money from the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF).

The suspect, taken into custody yesterday (18), is accused of aiding and abetting the crime by conspiring with others who had submitted forged documents claiming entitlement to permanent government pension appointments.

Earlier, six men and two women were arrested in connection with the same case and remanded after being produced before the court. The latest arrest involves the husband of one of the previously detained female suspects.

The CID said the suspect will be produced before the Medawachchiya Magistrate’s Court. Investigations into the fraudulent withdrawals are continuing. (Newswire)
