Afternoon showers are expected in some parts of Sri Lanka today, while mainly dry weather will prevail over the other parts of the island, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Northwestern and Uva provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts after 1.00 pm today.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kalutara and Kurunegala districts in the morning.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Galle via Batticaloa and Hambantota.

Winds will be South-easterly or variable in direction. Wind speed will be 20-30 kmph.

The sea areas around the island will be slight. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
