Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has alleged that the use of substandard coal at the Norochcholai Power Plant, coupled with recent fuel price hikes, has placed an unbearable burden on the public.
Issuing a special statement, Premadasa claimed that the power plant has failed to generate the required electricity output in recent days due to the use of low-quality coal, resulting in a significant shortfall in power generation.
He noted that the reduction in electricity generation has forced authorities to rely more on fuel-based power plants, increasing production costs and ultimately leading to higher electricity bills for consumers.
Premadasa further alleged that the government is attempting to attribute rising electricity costs to the ongoing Middle East conflict, while the real issue stems from the use of substandard coal.
He warned that the situation could also lead to environmental and health concerns, adding that issues such as equipment damage and operational failures have been reported at the plant due to poor coal quality.
The Opposition Leader stressed that the responsibility for the issue lies with the government and called for transparency regarding coal procurement and energy sector decisions.
He also highlighted that the recent fuel price increases have further worsened the situation, placing additional pressure on the public and the broader economy.
Premadasa urged the government to provide relief to the public, including reducing taxes on fuel and ensuring that the burden of increased costs is not passed on to consumers. (Newswire)
