A Customs Superintendent, who is currently under suspension, was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on Monday (23) over corruption charges linked to the illegal sale of palm oil meant for destruction.

Investigations revealed that five containers of palm oil, deemed unfit for human consumption by the Food and Drug Inspector, had been ordered destroyed under Section 109 of the Customs Ordinance.

However, the suspect allegedly removed the containers to a private location and sold the palm oil from one container for about Rs. 4 million. He then submitted documents claiming the stock had been destroyed while retaining the original records.

The suspect, a resident of Siddhamulla, Piliyandala, is to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. (NewsWire)
