Prof. Harding meets PM on new education evaluation reforms

A special discussion was held at the Ministry of Education, Isurupaya, between Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, and Professor Luke William Harding, Chairman of the Committee reviewing the evaluation and assessment process.

Professor Harding, a world-renowned expert in language research and educational assessment, is in Sri Lanka from March 20 to 25, 2026, to participate in key meetings regarding the proposed framework. During his visit, he will hold policy discussions and workshops with the Digital Task Force, the Evaluation and Assessment Committee, the Department of Examinations, the National Institute of Education, the National Education Commission, and will lead a special session on teacher professional development.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister said a new assessment process aligned with international standards will be introduced under the module-based system for Grade 6. She stressed that clear guidelines for teachers are necessary to ensure classroom activities are evaluated qualitatively. She added that the process is central to the reforms and designed to help students identify their abilities and achieve educational goals without unnecessary pressure on students or teachers.

The discussion was attended by Deputy Minister Dr. Madura Seneviratne, Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa, Commissioner General of Examinations Indika Liyanage, and members of the Education Reform Evaluation Committee. (NewsWire)
