Suspect arrested for fuel theft using fake vehicle QR code

A suspect has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Nittambuwa for illegally obtaining fuel by overriding a vehicle’s QR code system.

Investigations found that the suspect had altered the QR code assigned to a woman’s vehicle by creating a new code using modified data to obtain fuel, following which the Digital Economy Ministry filed a complaint with the CID based on information received via the 1919 hotline.

Subsequently, investigations were carried out by the Cyber Surveillance and Intelligence Unit of the Computer Crimes Investigation Division (CCID) under the CID.

The arrested suspect is a resident of Piliyandala area.

Authorities are also probing individuals who may have facilitated the release of fuel using the illegally generated QR code. (NewsWire)
