Teachers’ Union opposes directive over PM meeting absence

The Association of General Teacher Professionals has voiced strong opposition to a directive requiring teachers in the Tangalle education zone to provide explanations for not attending a meeting with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya on March 15.

In a letter dated March 25, the Association noted that principals had instructed teachers to submit reasons for their absence from the meeting, which was held on a Sunday, a holiday for teachers.

The Association stressed that attendance at such gatherings on holidays is voluntary, and questioning teachers over non‑attendance is inappropriate.

The Association described the directive as an unlawful exercise of authority and called for its immediate withdrawal.

It further warned that failure to rescind the order would compel the union to take strong trade union action. (Newswire)
