The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Sri Lanka has successfully hosted one of its largest international weddings, welcoming over 800 international guests for the four‑day celebration of entrepreneur Mujtaba Shaikhani and Dr. Hafsha Merchant at the Shangri‑La Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa.
Guests from the UAE, India, Pakistan, the UK, and Sri Lanka stayed an average of five to seven nights, contributing significantly to the tourism economy. The event, from 26-29 March, blended tradition and modern luxury, culminating in a sunset nikkah ceremony overlooking the Indian Ocean and a grand reception titled The Royal Affair.
The Government states that promoting and supporting such international events is a key responsibility in advancing Sri Lanka’s tourism vision. Both government and private institutions are expected to ensure seamless hospitality and infrastructure for future large‑scale gatherings.
The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) and the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB) officially endorsed the wedding and extended full support, underscoring the nation’s commitment to positioning itself as a premier global destination for weddings and international events.
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath participated in the celebrations on Sunday (29), highlighting the occasion as a symbol of friendship, cultural exchange, and goodwill.
Looking ahead, the Ministry noted that this landmark wedding demonstrates Sri Lanka’s ability to host large‑scale international gatherings with elegance, authenticity, and world‑class hospitality. It is not only a celebration of love but also a showcase of Sri Lanka’s potential as one of the world’s leading destinations for weddings and beyond. (Newswire)
