The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today (31) ordered the release of former Parliamentarian Sajin Vass Gunawardena on bail, following his arrest by the Bribery Commission over allegations of illegally earning assets worth Rs. 243.8 million.

Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama imposed two sureties of Rs. 05 million each and barred the suspect from foreign travel.

Gunawardena was produced before court by prison officials after being held in remand custody since March 9, when he was detained while giving a statement to the Bribery Commission.

The Commission informed court that charges had been filed over undisclosed assets between 2015 and 2026, noting that Gunawardena and his family had undertaken 27 foreign trips without submitting expense reports.

Investigations also revealed personal bank accounts maintained by his wife containing around Rs. 34 million, and a new business venture valued at over Rs. 40 million.

While the Bribery Commission sought further remand to continue investigations and record statements from family members, Gunawardena’s lawyer requested bail, which was granted today. (Newswire)
