State Vesak festival to be held in Matara

The Cabinet has approved plans to hold the State Vesak Festival of 2026 (Buddhist Year 2570) in the Matara District, centred at the ancient Midellawala temple premises in Thihagoda.

Organized jointly by the Ministry of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Ministry of Public Administration, and the Department of Buddhist Affairs, the festival will be conducted under the theme “Abhiththaretha Kalyane” (Let us swiftly unite for the common good).

The national celebrations will run from May 27 to June 2, 2026, which has been declared Vesak Week. 

During this period, a wide range of Buddhist religious programs will be organized and implemented across the country.

The joint proposal was presented by the Minister of Public Administration, together with the Minister of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs. (Newswire)
