Bimal Rathnayake holds high-level talks in Moscow to boost Sri Lanka-Russia ties

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development and Leader of the House Bimal Rathnayake has held a series of high-level meetings in Moscow aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between Sri Lanka and Russia.

During the official visit, Minister Rathnayake met Andrey Denisov, First Deputy Chair of the Committee on International Affairs of the Federation Council, where discussions focused on enhancing parliamentary cooperation, transport connectivity and broader economic engagement.

He also held talks with Vladimir Vasiliev, Leader of the United Russia faction in the State Duma, along with representatives of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, aimed at strengthening parliamentary ties and establishing friendship groups between legislative bodies.

The Minister further met Roman Marshavin to explore cooperation in the energy sector and related fields, while expressing appreciation for Russia’s continued engagement with Sri Lanka.

Both sides also discussed plans to commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Russia in 2027, with proposals for joint initiatives and exchanges.

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Russia Shobini Gunasekera hosted an official dinner in Moscow attended by Russian officials and representatives, providing an opportunity for informal discussions and strengthening people-to-people ties.

Minister Rathnayake is also scheduled to participate in the International Transport and Logistics Forum in St. Petersburg from April 1 to 4, where he will engage with international stakeholders on transport, logistics and regional connectivity. (Newswire)
