Water levels in Castlereigh, Maussakelle reservoirs fall amid dry weather

Water levels in the Castlereigh and Maussakelle reservoirs have dropped sharply due to prevailing dry weather conditions in catchment areas on the western slopes of the central hills.

According to the reservoir engineers, the water level in the Maussakelle reservoir had fallen to 47 feet as of 6.00 a.m. on Wednesday (08), while the Castlereigh reservoir had dropped to 43.8 feet.

Engineers noted that the rapid decline has exposed several submerged structures and small islands that had previously been underwater.

Water from the two reservoirs is used for power generation at several hydropower plants, including Wimalasurendra, Laxapana, New Laxapana, Canyon and Polpitiya.
