Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said today’s parliamentary vote on the no-confidence motion against the Energy Minister had revealed divisions over the protection of electricity consumers.

Speaking to the media after a no-confidence vote against Minister Kumara Jayakody, Premadasa said the outcome showed which parliamentarians supported those allegedly involved in the coal issue and which stood for consumer rights.

He said 153 members from the ruling party backed what he described as those linked to substandard coal and related irregularities, while 49 opposition members, led by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, voted in favor of protecting electricity consumers and opposing electricity tariff increases.

Premadasa said the opposition would continue its efforts despite the vote outcome.

“We will continue to mobilize the public and stand for the rights of electricity consumers,” he said. (Newswire)
