Sri Lanka is seeking to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to promote sustainable industrial development and energy efficiency, following engagements at an international forum in Vienna.
Minister Sunil Handunneththi attended the International Vienna Energy and Climate Forum (IVECF 2026) held in Vienna, Austria, where discussions focused on addressing global energy challenges and climate change.
Discussions with UNIDO officials centred on enhancing technical cooperation, improving institutional support and building international partnerships to support Sri Lanka’s industrial sector.
Key areas of focus included improving energy efficiency in local industries to reduce production costs, expanding access to global markets and technologies for young entrepreneurs, and promoting environmentally sustainable industrial practices.
Attention was also given to reducing plastic and polythene pollution and fostering a greener industrial framework.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening Sri Lanka’s integration with global industrial networks while ensuring long-term sustainable growth. (Newswire)
