Sri Lanka Police has introduced a dedicated WhatsApp number, 070-4755600, for the public to report incidents of reckless and dangerous driving, the Police Media Division said.

The move comes as increased use of social media has led to more road incidents being recorded and shared online.

Authorities said members of the public have been submitting video footage of traffic violations, including speeding, unsafe overtaking and other hazardous driving behaviors.

Police said such submissions have assisted in identifying offenders and taking legal action. The department expressed appreciation for public cooperation in providing video evidence of incidents, including cases involving loss of vehicle control, dangerous maneuvers and unsafe crossings.

The new WhatsApp number will operate 24 hours a day under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety.

Police requested that the public submit relevant video footage along with details such as the date, location and the police division where the incident occurred.

Authorities also urged the public not to send fabricated or AI-generated content and to support efforts aimed at improving road safety and enforcing traffic laws. (Newswire)
